BOOKS FOR YOUNG READERS BY CINDY L. RODRIGUEZ

COMING SOON!

Perfect for fans of The Doll People and The Total Eclipse of Nester Lopez, a Guatemalan American girl fights to stop her cursed worry dolls before they blanket her friends and neighbors in anxiety—and the grief she carries over the loss of her father—in this magical middle grade adventure by Cindy L. Rodriguez.

Lola Reyes doesn’t want to leave Guatemala, a place full of warmth and sun, laughter and music—where her abuela and prima and tíos and tías surround her with love. Back in Sunnyside, it’s cold. There’s schoolwork and chores. And her mama transforms into Lola’s super-serious school principal, Dr. Reyes.

Back at home… Lola can see, crystal clear, the empty place where Pop used to be. So Lola decides to bring a little bit of Guatemala—and Pop—back with her. She discovers his box of childhood worry dolls and sneaks them into her luggage, ignoring the warnings on the box not to use them. Later, when she tells them all her worries, from her friendship woes to the way Mama won’t talk about how sad she is, the worry dolls come to life! Worse—they escape!

Lola has to enlist her neighbor and nemesis, Chance Townsend, to recapture the dolls because she discovers they’re cursed! And as they absorb worries, they’ll grow bigger and bigger. If Lola can’t find a way to stop them, they’ll burst, releasing all the worries they’ve absorbed a hundredfold on everyone in town! But when breaking the curse might mean confronting her own anxieties and grief, will Lola be able face her emotions before it’s too late?

Have you ever felt like you just couldn’t get out of bed? Not the occasional morning, but every day? Do you find yourself listening to a voice in your head that says “you’re not good enough,” “not good looking enough,” “not thin enough,” or “not smart enough”? Have you ever found yourself unable to do homework or pay attention in class unless everything is “just so” on your desk? Everyone has had days like that, but what if you have them every day?

You’re not alone. Millions of people are going through similar things. However issues around mental health still tend to be treated as something shrouded in shame or discussed in whispers. It’s easier to have a broken bone–something tangible that can be “fixed”–than to have a mental illness, and easier to have a discussion about sex than it is to have one about mental health.

  • I read your book and i am doing a blog for school about it. The only problem is i don’t have the book with me. I forget the two boys names. Can u help me?

  • I’m doing a project on your books for school and I would like to know a few things. If Kevin and Thomas were to join activities such as clubs and sports what would they exactly be? What are their plans after high school? What book has had the greatest impact on Kevin and Thomas?

  • Hi, I just checked out your book from the library today, and tore through it. It was a beautifully written book, and at one or two points, I actually cried! The characters were so real and human that it almost seemed like a real story. I thought that it would have been Elizabeth who attempted suicide and was the one who wrote all the notes, and was super surprised when I found it was Emily. Overall, I absolutely loved the book, and I would love to know if you have any books in the making at the moment!

    • Hi Kyra,
Thanks so much for leaving such a wonderful comment. I’m so glad you connected with the characters and enjoyed my book! I have a young adult book project being considered by editors now, and I’m going to be working on a middle grade project later this summer. I’ll be sure to post any news if either project gets picked up. Thanks so much for reading!

  • Hi Cindy, I am hoping you can recommend a book for my class. I am a 5th grade teacher looking to expose my kids to the latinx experience in the U.S. The objective is to read aloud to my students a portion at a time while they contemplate a discussion question. We just finished “A Long Walk To Water” by Linda Sue Park. If I can find something similar in structure and true story content, that would be perfect. Thanks.

  • Hi Cindy, I found you through subscription to CRP and as a bilingual myself, (Filipino) I celebrate your success writing picture books, middle grade and young adult. You are an inspiration to other culture. Just by reading the synopsis of Three Pockets Full, it’s a sure winner! Mabuhay ang mga Latino! (Long live the Latinos!) I wish you more books to come.
